Art of stillness… or chilling the f* down. 😀 I’ve been having some thoughts on how “being busy” has become a 2nd word for “success”. If you ask somebody how are you doing, what have you been up to, etc. 99% of the time the answer will be something like: ” Dude, I’ve been SOOOOO busy!” Being soooo busy has become a norm for being so important, so advanced, so successful that it makes me laugh.
I am a busy person, my personality is such that I can’t stay still for too long or I get very anxious. I love being busy but being busy with a purpose, busy in a way that pushes me forward, instead of holding me back from living life to the fullest. I have worked hard to reach that state of mind where being laidback and making more time and space for random little things in daily life and just being FINE with only doing that. Chilling and enjoying it!
Often I’ve felt that if I’m not busy just like and as much as everybody else, it means that I’m missing out, something is SO wrong with me and my life isn’t as exciting or fulfilled as everybody else’s. If you’re not on the go 0-24 and if you actually do make time to meet people, go out to eat, go out to dance the night away, go to the cinema, you’re definitely having a tag “looser” on your forehead or what? Nope! So not true!
Don’t spend your life being busy doing the wrong kind of “being busy”. Don’t wait for your holidays once or twice a year to remember to chill down but take a moment to actually do absolutely nothing and just be fine with that right now in this day even! Take a long walk in the forest or by the sea without constantly feeling like you have to time everything in order to make it everywhere and do everything. Don’t stretch yourself so thin that in the end the only person who will become very busy will be yourself but with a major burnout and most likely some sort of depressing feeling. Take a moment each day to read a book, spend an hour on the phone talking to your best friend, meditate, whatever… Just don’t feel guilty about it.
Yes, work hard and prove yourself at work, be a responsible adult and do things which you need to do, but remember that being popularly busy is not worth the price that it comes with. I have been there and it didn’t ended well, my health got bad, I’ve become very anxious and was left with the feeling of emptiness and unsatisfaction. For what? For blaming being too busy to actually enjoy the little things in life, for being too busy to just chill on a Saturday night and not feel a serious case of FOMO instead? Art of stillness is not something you should ever dwell on… Sometimes, you should make it your priority instead! 🙂

I really need to practice slowing down, but then when i slow down i feel bad because i could have gotten more done. I think we all need time to relax, and relaxing here and there is very helpful.

love this post and I couldn’t agree more with that ‘buys me’ concept! it does make me laugh how everyone around me is sooooo incredibly busy, too busy to even respond to a message (sometimes I get responses like a day later, when I forgot about the original message!). forget about face to face catch up, it requires like 3 months planning.

I love your sweater! You’re so right about taking some time off for yourself and not feeling guilty about it. We all need time to rest and de-stress. Whenever my sister doesn’t, she becomes physically ill, as if she caught the stomach flu. My favorite thing to do is to drive out to a hiking trail and just immerse myself with the fresh air and nature. 🙂
