5 tips for Summer festivals

July 15, 2016

Summer is my most favourite time of the year! Surprise, surprise, that was SO hard to predict. 😀 Ever since I was little, I was living for Summer and everything that comes with it, endless sunshine, happy times at the beach, swimming my heart out in the sea, eating tons of ice cream and just being carefree.

KesĂ€ on minun suosikki vuoden aika. YllĂ€ty, yllĂ€tys, olipa vaikea arvata 🙂 Olen ihan pienestĂ€ pitĂ€en elĂ€nyt kesĂ€lle ja kaikkeen mikĂ€ siihen liittyy. Loputon auringonpaiste, iloisia hetkiĂ€ rannalla, estoton meressĂ€ uiminen, jÀÀtelön syöminen litra kaupalla ja huoleton fiilis.

One of the reasons why I’ve been loving Summer even more as I was growing older was ( and still is ) all of the happenings that seem to happen many times a week, every week, through the whole Summer. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with so many interesting events to go to and so many amazing Summer festivals to check out.

If we concentrate only on Finland and my favourite Summer festivals this year, then I would def. pick out Tammerfest which is happening next week, Flow festival which takes place in August and Ruisrock which was just this past weekend. Tons of amazing performers all in one place throughout 3 days is what makes Summer festivals some of the best music experiences ever. Not just that you get to see some of your favourite bands perform in those three days, but you also get to be part of that magical Summer festival vibe, mingle between lots of people ( and possibly make new friends ) with the same love for music, exploring the food boots, etc.

I’m personally preparing to visit Tammerfest next weekend to see some of my favourite musicians, Hurts and The Sounds being the main acts of interest for visiting this festival. It’s a three day long festival in the city of Tampere, which I haven’t visited in years either, so I’m really excited and looking forward to the next week. Since I’ve been going to Summer festivals for so many years now, I would like to share some of the important tips for everybody who will be going to the Summer festivals too.

Valmistaudun henkilökohtaisesti matkustamaan Tammerfestiin ensi viikonloppuna, nÀhdÀkseni muutamia minun suosikki bÀndejÀ. The Hurtsin ja The Soundsin ollessa pÀÀ syy poiketa tÀllÀ festivaalilla. Tapahtuma kestÀÀ 3 pÀivÀÀ Tampereella, jossa en ole kÀynyt vuosiin. Joten olen todella innoissani ja maltan tuskin odottaa ensi viikkoa. Koska olen kÀynyt kesÀ festivaalille jo vuosia. Haluaisin jakaa muutaman tÀrkeÀn vinkin, teille jotka olette vielÀ menossa tÀnÀ kesÀnÀ festivaaleille.

TIP NR 1 – Check the weather

I would def. suggest you to check the weather prior to leaving to any Summer festival. This way you’ll know if you need sun protection like sun lotion, fedora hats and sunglasses or if you should rather pack a rain coats, Hunter boots and a warm hoodie. Even though Summer festivals are an open air events and are imagined as a lot of fun “under” the sun with that “Coachella vibe” going on, many of them don’t look like that if the weather happens to be cloudy, rainy and windy. This doesn’t mean that the festival can’t be fun if there’s no sunshine, you just need to come prepared and properly dressed. 🙂

Vaikka moni kesÀn festivaali on ulkoilma tapahtuma.

I usually check this website for the as accurate forecast as possible.

TIP NR 2 – Chargers & cash

This is also very important! Remember to bring your phone charger(S), the regular one and the recharged one, so if you’re in the middle of that amazing festival and there isn’t a charging station nearby your phone won’t “die” since you’ll have a portable charged up battery with you where you can “feed” your phone from. Also, the cash part – remember that credit card isn’t maybe the smartest or safest choice to bring along to the festival site. Rather withdraw/ bring some certain amount of cash which you’re planning to use for that day and do the same each day of the festival.

Find some portable chargers here!

TIP NR 3 – Book your hotel/ hostel/ airbnb

Make sure to book your hotel, hostel or airbnb place as long in advance as possible. Summer festivals attract big crowds of people and many of them are coming from different cities, even countries to visit so majority of them will fill up all of the hotels/ hostels/ airbnb places very fast. Good old camping in tents is also alright, but it’s not fun to be inside your small tent in case it starts to rain or a possible Summer storm hits at night.

Booking.com or Airbnb are usually my “go-to” booking websites.

VINKKI # 3 Varaa hotelli/hostelli/airbnb

TIP NR 4 – Try out the food boots

Yes! Summer festivals have changed a lot throughout the years and food boots aren’t as boring or “greasy” as they used to be. There’re many amazing restaurants which have started as food boots in some Summer festivals which have wooed people by their delicious food. Usually all of the Summer festivals are happening bit outside of the city so the easiest way to get some food is by checking out what food boots are available at the festival area. Go and explore, you might get nicely surprised, just like I did. 🙂

VINKKI # 4 Kokeile ruoka kojuja

TIP NR 5 – Enjoy

My final tip is to simply enjoy! Just forget about all of your problems, worries, issues, whatever and be present in that moment. Some of my best and happiest memories were made during Summer festivals and I will cherrish them forever. I’m not that big into massages and all sorts of pampering ( mani-pedis ,etc. ) but I find things like going to a concert / festival to see some of my favourite bands perform as a full body and mind treatment. I always feel rejuvenated after a great 3 day Summer festival.

VINKKI # 5 Nauti

Viimeinen vinkki on ainoastaan nauttia.

Thank you so much for that useful advice, Natali. Specially the phone charger. I have been in Brugge. My home from home where there have been festivals and concerts galore. But we must be aware that in the midst of happiness there is also sadness, and my heart cries for the people in Nice.

Thank you Jo for commenting. Yes, that is true what you wrote about Nice, but I must say that I did mention this on my Instagram and yes, pretty much writing/ posting about anything else, doesn’t really feel relevant, but I had this post planned for the Friday and that’s why I have published it.

It is no surprise I am definitely a city girl but I enjoy escaping it too.
I’ve done my fair share of camping and lake/river style boat holidays
but I’ve never overly loved camping.
