Visit Helsinki: Pastis brunch

August 31, 2016

Pastis is the anise flavoured spirit and aperitif from France, typically containing up to 45% alcohol by the volume and 100 gr of sugar per litre. This is the mini task I gave to myself upon visiting Pastis last weekend for brunch – to check out the meaning of word/ name “Pastis”. I saw beautiful, empty bottles labeled Pastis by the big restaurant’s windows and that’s when the curiosity about the name started.

I have previously covered a full story on Pastis restaurant here, so check it out if you’re interested to see the classic dishes and my first time experience of this restaurant. This time around I came back on a sunny Saturday afternoon for a very sought after – brunch!

In the past two years, brunches have become very popular among Helsinkians. Usually every weekend, all of the hot spots in the city are fully booked and it’s hard to find a free table, so it’s wise to book your table in advance to make sure that you’ll get to enjoy your weekend treat at the place and time that you want.

I’d say that the “philosophy” behind the brunches is to combine late breakfast with early lunch, meaning that you eat bit of both but not to feel too full, but nicely satisfied. 🙂

Brunsseista on tullut tosi kysyttyjä Helsinkiläisten keskuudessa, viimeisen kahden vuoden aikana. Kaikki kaupungin ylistetyt paikat ovat yleensä täynnä viikonloppuisin, ja pöytiä on todella vaikea saada. Joten on viisasta varata pöytä etukäteen.

That’s exactly what’s waiting for you at Pastis, a little piece of Paris in the heart of Helsinki city and ever so popular Kartin area which has slowly turned into a very interesting and promising “restaurant hood”. From a beautifully presented and perfectly assembled charcuterie platter, some brioche and sour dough breads, jam to shrimp cocotte and a sweet ending with a dessert is what will make all of your foodie senses wake up and give you a satisfying, gourmet weekend start.

Brunches are perfect to share with your friends and family, so def. do gather your favourite people to share this experience with. Pastis brunch is available every Saturday for 29 eur per person from 11:30am to 3:30 pm and then the a-la carte menu becomes available from 4 pm.

Here’s a small breakdown of what’s to expect at Pastis:

CHARCUTERIE PLATTER

pastisbrunch3

pastisbrunch2

This was one of the best charcuterie platters ever! Great selection for two or even three persons, great choice of pate, duck mousse, ham with fennel, bresaola, cold smoked salmon, tomato tartine with fresh cheese, marinated chanterelle mushrooms, sweet & pickled onion, pickled cucumbers and olives.

Pate was by far the best pate you can find in Helsinki, meat based with over than 30 ingredients and something that Pastis’s main chef and owner specialises in, since he used to live in Germany where he used to work only on pates.

Tämä oli yksi parhaista leikkele lajitelmista ikinä! Ihan loistava valikoima kahdella jopa kolmelle henkilölle.

Duck mousse might come off a little bit on the “sour side” but when it’s paired with pickled onion, it get’s a nice sweeties and “oomph” kick which balances it all out and makes it just perfect on it’s own or spread on a sourdough bread.

Ham and bresaola were the salty, thin, buttery layers of meat lovers paradise, cold smoked salmon was as great as expected, after all we’re in country where you do expect to get the best salmon anything. 😀

Tomato tartine with fresh cheese and marinated chanterelle mushrooms was my favourite part of the whole platter, so I highly recommend them, just as I recommend you to spread that wonderful orange jam on brioche bread – mmmm!!

Ankka mousse saattaa maistua joidenkin mielestä hieman happamalta.

SHRIMP COCOTTE

pastisbrunch5

pastisbrunch6

This dish reminded me of shakshuka – dish of eggs poached in tomato and chili sauce, but in this “French version” called shrimp and egg cocotte, we were served poached eggs in creamy sauce with spinach and shrimps. If you’re “afraid” of butter, then this dish might not be the right one but if you’re open minded and love to treat yourself some delicious comfort food, then def. dig in into this wonderful warm dish which I recommend to eat with the sourdough bread dipped into it. 🙂

PISTACHIO FRANGIPANE WITH RASPBERRY MOUSSE

pastisbrunch7

No extra description needed – PURE PERFECTION and a soother to my sweet tooth daily cravings!

To conclude my Pastis experience – fine dining brunch worth every penny, from the ambient, to one of the best costumer services in the city to the very delicious food/ brunch – the French, bon vivant style – the Pastis way. 🙂

Tämä annos ei kaipaa mitään lisä selitystä. SULA TÄYDELLISYYS ja makean himon sammuttaja!

Pastis kokemuksen päätelmä- Fine dining brunssi joka on jokaisen pennin arvoinen. Johtuen ympäristöstä, yhdestä kaupungin parhaasta asiakaspalvelusta ja tietenkin todella makoisasta ruuasta / brunssista. Se Ranskalainen, bon vivant tyyli Pastiksen tapaan. 🙂

Not only have I been burning the candle at both ends this week; been burning the piece in the middle too. So what I’m trying to say, and badly, is I see before me another stunning array of photos and yummy food. I’m sure if I were there I would make short work of those dishes.
    Well done, Natali x
